Chapter 519
by post_apiChapter 519: Steamwheedle Port
The "Witty Traveler" sailed along the coast for three days. Jesse watched as the continuous barren slopes became drier. The cliffs, precipices, and boulders gradually flattened out. Finally, after crossing a steep cliff, one morning, the view was completely covered with yellow sand.
By noon, the ship sailed into a small bay surrounded by low hills. Here, they could finally see some yellowing, seemingly half-dead palm trees squeezed together on the shore.
Among these palm trees, small adobe houses were stacked between the trees and boulders. Although no one was in sight yet, Jesse could already hear the noisy goblins on the shore.
The Tanaris Desert was hot and dry. Even the sea breeze felt difficult to breathe, as if swept over by the breath of an angry black dragon.
Jesse quickly took off the mountain lion skin cloak that had been blocking sea and rainwater along the way, loosened his robe to cool down. Greed and the other dwarfs, who were not afraid of sunburn, had already taken off their shirts, revealing their brown chests and shoulders, looking like big chunks of dirt rolling in from somewhere.
Vereesa, who already had slightly pink skin, was now hot and flushed, sweating profusely. Strands of silver hair on her forehead were stuck together.
The High Elves usually lived in the cool and comfortable Eversong Woods arranged by the Sunwell. They were probably not used to such extreme climates.
Compared to Booty Bay, Steamwheedle Port is like a small village with a few hundred people. When the "Clever Travels" entered this port, it was like a big elephant squeezing into a pig pen, carefully and slowly avoiding touching any fragile buildings, small docks, or other docked boats.
With a clang clang, clang clang of the bell, a large group of goblins had already gathered around the ship ready to help unload. Jesse was standing at the exit of the ship, looking into Steamwheedle Port, aside from goblins, they could already see many trolls, and even humans coming and going.
"I’m a bit thirsty," Vereesa whispered.
Greed glanced at the warped scenery in the distance due to the heat and said, "I can imagine how difficult it is to get water here."
"I’m somewhat of a mage." Jesse patted the Azuresong Mageblade at their waist and said, "You two just trust me."
"Ah, I remember now, this sword was not given to him for nothing, Vereesa." Greed nodded and said, "Without this sword stabilizing his Arcane energy, you better be prepared to witness his water creation spell, scarier than those darn Dark Iron explosive barrels!"
"Get lost," Jesse frowned and said, "Hurry and get off the ship! Everyone ahead has already left!"
Vereesa couldn’t help but smile and followed the footsteps of the two people pushing each other ahead.
Even though Steamwheedle Port doesn’t look very big, it is much larger in scale than in the game. At least from the docks, you can immediately see neatly stacked cargo crates and rows of tents behind, inns, and various other stone buildings, of course, with various shops too.
The road leading to Steamwheedle Port by the dock also goes deep into the desert. A signpost with both Goblin Language and Common written on it points in the direction of Gadgetzan, saying "Gadgetzan 44 miles away".
"Look, we are still far from Gadgetzan," Jesse pointed at the sign and said, "Let’s rest here today."
Greed looked at the small crowded inns up high and said, "I wonder if there are any empty rooms in the inns, this port looks small and crowded."
The three climbed up the ladder made of stones and entered a small shack-like building. Jesse looked at the goblin boss behind the counter and asked, "Are there any vacant rooms?"
The goblin took off his glasses and looked at Vereesa then Jesse, saying, "There is one at the back and an empty one in the building to the west."
"Two rooms," Jesse looked back at the other two and said, "Vereesa, will you take one for yourself?"
"Do I… stay with you?"
Greed stared hard with his eyes, glancing at Jesse beside him. Jesse knew what he meant and he definitely didn’t want to stay in a room with Molofeel.
"Then, how about you two staying together?" Jesse suggested.
"No!" The dwarf and the elf said at the same time.
"Oh, forget it!" Greed waved his hand and said, "I don’t have as many problems as those long-eyebrowed ones. I will share a room with you, Jesse Seso!"
Vereesa glanced to the side, the goblin boss looked at the three of them assigning rooms with a puzzled expression, then took a careful look at Jesse, furrowing his brow as if sensing something amiss.
Jesse asked, "How much?"
"Five silver coins…" the goblin used both hands to show five fingers, saying, "per room, so two for one night would be ten silver coins."
"Stealing money?!" Greed shouted, even startling Vereesa.
The goblin grinned widely, putting on a fake smile, "Welcome to Kalimdor, everyone."
"Just give us one room," the elf said, frowning.
Jesse asked, "Are you sure?"
The dwarf looked at the elf in confusion.
"Okay," Vereesa said.
"Then just one room," Jesse said to the innkeeper.
The innkeeper looked disdainfully at the three of them, pausing briefly between their clothing and weapons, nodded reluctantly, and took out a piece of paper to write on.
"How do we get to Gadgetzan from here?" Jesse asked.
"You can join the caravan tomorrow morning," the goblin replied, "Of course, it will cost you, but you can choose to follow behind as free security guards, no one will bother you."
"That’s not a bad idea," Greed agreed.
Following the goblin to the second-floor room, they saw sand and grit everywhere on the bed, floor, and table that couldn’t be swept away.
Vereesa struggled to clean the only bed, but the wind brought in more sand from unknown corners.
Although the inn in Steamwheedle Port is not as nice as in Stormwind or Booty Bay, at least there is a decent bed in a cozy little building.
After stopping at Gadgetzan and setting off again, it was uncertain if there would be another chance to rest in a bed.
Greed spat out some sand from his lips, brushed off the dust from his clothes, and said, "This reminds me of the time we went to the digging site of the Dark Iron Tribe with that dwarf, Daggett. Do you remember?"
"I do," Jesse replied. "But back then, we either slept in ditches or caves. I never expected to be sleeping in an inn now and still finding sand everywhere."
"This isn’t Dalaran," Greed pointed at Jesse’s waist. "Hurry, use your magic sword to conjure some water for us to drink, Jesse. That’s what matters the most!"
Hearing this, Vereesa licked her dry lips.
