Chapter 196
by Need_More_SleepChapter 196: Get Out (Two-In-One)
“Drive carefully—that’s a high-risk compound inside. No leaks.”
“That tiny box holds something that is dangerous?”
“Just drive. Chemicals are unpredictable. Saw a Metropolis University lab blow up from two drops of liquid once.”
The truck carried a shipment from Sunshine City Research Institute to Metropolis University.
Normally, distant research facilities didn’t share materials like schools swapping chalk.
This convoy resembled an armored cash transport—with five guards in the back, eyes locked on a palm-sized box secured in the center.
All this manpower for one item.
But the box didn’t contain chemicals.
Inside were two Antidote Herbs—one from Mi Xiaoliu’s Monday delivery, the other leftover from last time.
Who wouldn’t want these?
At least the guards had no such thoughts.
Every team member was handpicked—not just for clean records, but for no critically ill family members.
No dramatic “steal it for my dying wife” scenarios.
Logically, they could’ve just mailed the box. But one slip-up, and it’d vanish forever.
We’re the government—why hide? Do cash trucks skulk around?
If Antidote Herbs ever mass-produced, it’d mark a new era of evolution. But no matter the supply, the price would exclude the poor.
“Alert—motorcycle approaching.”
“Female, under 20, no visible weapons. Street racer?”
“That engine’s modified for noise. Slow down, honk—tell her to back off. Can’t she see the ‘Flammable’ signs? Stop and arrest if she gets closer.”
The team leader switched to tranq rounds—under-20s included minors.
Last time a Fanzui City cop shot a kid, he got crushed by gravity until his blood vessels ruptured. Then his boss, coworkers, and the girl’s family all reamed him out…
“She’s cutting us off—the Tian Xing Dao gang?”
Even in Sunshine City, young criminals meant Tian Xing Dao.
The truck braked hard—armed men poured out.
—–—
“Speed limit exceeded… Red light camera ahead… Turn around in 100 meters… Collision detected…”
Yiwen hated phone GPS. Did the designers not consider flying users? Must she follow roads?
At least long-distance navigation was harder to mess up—pinpointing the exact location took extra time.
The thought of Mi Xiaoliu with some creepy stranger made Yiwen fume.
What kind of bodyguard drags their charge along on errands? Is he a predator?
Or worse—a homewrecker?!
She just got her girlfriend!
Her panic intensified.
Below, a broken-down truck caught her eye—surrounded by unconscious, heavily armed men in super-cop gear.
Finding trouble while searching for Mi Xiaoliu? It felt like being back in Fanzui City.
But these aren’t work hours.
But she couldn’t just fly away and ignore this.
Yiwen tore off her jacket, covering half her face as she landed—force of habit for super-cops hiding their identities.
The injuries varied wildly—blunt force, electric burns, gunshots, poisoning, even some with no visible wounds. Clearly, a large-scale battle between ability users had taken place.
A robbery? But there were no enemy casualties—meaning it was a one-sided slaughter.
Even the radios were destroyed.
Yiwen called an ambulance while scanning the scene.
A modified scooter sat parked in front of the truck—likely the attacker’s. The truck’s rear door was ajar…
Yiwen approached cautiously.
Then—a sigh echoed from inside.
A helmeted girl strode out, locking eyes with Yiwen before casually walking past her to right her scooter.
Yiwen froze. “Wait—what happened here?”
The girl ignored her, kickstarting the engine like Yiwen wasn’t even there.
Too suspicious. Has to be involved.
Yiwen stepped closer, ready to pin her with gravity—
—only for her own body to suddenly weigh several times heavier. Not enough to injure, but enough to paralyze her.
“Ugh—?!”
Yiwen faceplanted, head ringing.
Isn’t this my move?!
The scooter girl glanced back, then revved the throttle, leaving behind deafening noise and exhaust.
—
“I got the miracle herb. But I’m using it on my dad first. Is that okay?”
“Fine. But to get more—research needs multiple samples.”
“I know. I’ll capture Xiaoliu for you.” The girl’s voice dripped with irritation—not for the caller, but something else.
She’d seen the footage of the governor’s assassination—not the news clips, but raw recordings from ability users.
One moment stuck with her.
A man calling himself the Boss, demanded miracle herbs from Mi Xiaoliu—and she pulled out a whole handful.
Yet now, she only gives one per week to the public.
Did she know how many people suffered in hospital beds? How many lives she could’ve saved?
Gifted but selfish. A waste.
“Is she strong?” The girl stopped her scooter at the assassination site, removing her helmet.
Her long green hair whipped in the wind as she stared at the churning river.
The destroyed bridge was being rebuilt—not with Heli’s landlord money, but government funds.
“Very. Maybe not the strongest Sixth Fractal, but the most destructive.”
“Good. The stronger she is, the stronger I get.” She put her helmet back on.
“Don’t underestimate your predecessor. She has counters. Lure her somewhere open—like the meteor crater—and force her to release that thing. I’ll handle the Little Demon King.”
“Even if he comes, I’m not scared.”
“You should be. His ability’s weird. About your teammates—”
“Don’t need them.” The girl’s voice oozed arrogance.
—
Meanwhile, Elsewhere…
SMACK!
A sharp, crisp slap echoed through the vast living room.
“I’ve indulged your antics before, but this time you’ve gone too far. You’re practically a college student—your rebellious phase should be over by now.”
“I went too far? Then what do you call preserving my sister’s hand in a jar?!”
A mother-daughter fight, with awkward guests watching.
Gloria’s cheek still bore a red handprint, her eyes glistening with unshed tears—softening the Chairwoman’s expression slightly.
The bodyguards were used to this scene.
“Where did you put it?”
“Dunno. You’ve got Nuomi—let the traitor sniff it out.” Gloria locked herself in her room.
The Chairwoman hesitated, torn between knocking to comfort her and saving face in front of others. After a pause, she turned to Mi Xiaoliu.
Mi Xiaoliu huddled in the corner, hands clasped, while Nuomi circled her feet, wagging his tail and barking at the Chairwoman.
“Why is he in my house?”
Her voice was icy, masking her disgust.
Mi Xiaoliu had never left a good impression—yet kept reappearing. If not for Heli’s influence, she’d have expelled him long ago. Not like a middle-school-level boy belonged in high school anyway.
“Took a bodyguard job protecting him. Brought her along since Gloria was in trouble,” Nikita explained. “Got too late, so we stayed. Mind if we crash here again tonight?”
Even the bodyguards cringed at his audacity.
The Chairwoman’s skin crawled. This boy had a history of perving on Gloria’s underwear—right in front of her. Who knew what he’d done unsupervised?
But for appearances’ sake, she stayed composed.
“Did Gloria bring anything back?”
“A suitcase. Probably in her room.”
“Fine. You’re dismissed.” Her glare at Mi Xiaoliu made the get out clear.
She then ignored them, directing bodyguards to search the house while eyeing Gloria’s door.
Angry or not, her daughter needed comforting.
She nudged Nuomi to track the missing item—but the usually obedient golden retriever tugged her pants, barking at Mi Xiaoliu instead.
Ugh. Even the dog finds him disgusting.
She yanked Nuomi away. Letting the dog scare him would be undignified.
Nuomi: “Whine—”
—
“Not like I’m not busy,” Nikita mused, ignoring the dismissal.
(After just telling Gloria he was busy having fun?)
Mi Xiaoliu tugged his sleeve. “I want to go home.”
“Later. Helping my sister-in-law first. Stay inside—I’ll sense if you wander.” He lit a cigarette, lost in thought.
Mi Xiaoliu backed up, wary of secondhand smoke attacks (Thanks a lot, Gloria).
Once Nikita left, she opened her phone’s maps app—mimicking Yiwen.
“Master, no transforming here,” Sasha warned. (The shadow maid who’d caught Mi Xiaoliu last time was still around.)
Mi Xiaoliu pouted.
Then—something furry brushed her legs.
Nuomi, finally freed, trotted over with a blue plushie in his mouth.
“Woof!”
It was a caterpillar-shaped cat toy.
Mi Xiaoliu picked it up.
…Kind of cute?
She petted it.
Not as soft as Circle (Quanquan). Meh.
She returned it to Nuomi.
“Woof woof!” Nuomi refused.
“Woof woof.” Mi Xiaoliu squatted, attempting dog-speak.
“WOOF!” Nuomi, confused, yanked her pants toward the stairs.
Mi Xiaoliu didn’t budge.
Nuomi barked louder—drowning out the bodyguards’ search.
No one came. The Chairwoman was busy apologizing to Gloria, and dog-duty wasn’t the guards’ job.
“Nuomi, what are you barking at?!”
At last, Gloria lost her patience and vented her anger on the traitorous dog who had betrayed her.
Hearing her voice, Mi Xiaoliu turned and tried to head for the door.
Nuomi urgently bit at Mi Xiaoliu’s pant leg to stop her from leaving, letting out whining desperately.
When the Chairwoman came out to investigate, this was the scene that greeted her:
The disgusting, unlikable brat had somehow dug out the cat-worm plushie and was trying to walk off with it. Meanwhile, loyal Nuomi was biting the thief’s pants, barking for his owner to catch the thief.
This was the last straw!
This wasn’t just any plushie—it was one of Misha’s keepsakes. True, there were many of them, but that didn’t mean just anyone could take one.
Enough. Really, enough.
The Chairwoman suddenly remembered—back when Gloria was little, relatives who’d noticed their newfound wealth would visit, bringing along bratty kids who’d always try to sneak off with Gloria’s toys. Sometimes, they wouldn’t even notice until after the guests had left.
Back then, she’d let it slide for the sake of “manners” and “face”. So what if they took something? We can just buy another one.
But then—
Those same brats had gone into Misha’s room.
The owner of that room was long gone, but they still took Misha’s toys, just like they had with Gloria’s.
And what had she done about it then?
She stormed down the stairs and snatched the plushie back.
SMACK!
The same sharp, crisp sound as before.
“Get out.” The Chairwoman pointed to the door, her voice devoid of emotion.
Mi Xiaoliu clutched her stinging cheek.
“Bark! Bark bark!” Nuomi panicked, throwing himself between them.
“I said GET OUT!” she repeated.
Her last shred of patience had been spent back when this brat had pressed Gloria’s clothes to his face.
“You’d BETTER not regret this!” Sasha snarled.
