Chapter 66: One-Eyed Frog King
by karlmaksWith a tremendous “splash,” a gray-black monster shot out of the water, narrowly missing Su Li’s lifted legs. Its massive, bloody mouth savagely snapped at the air, and then its huge body plunged back into the water with a loud noise.
Su Li landed back inside the balcony. He looked back at the water just in time to see the monster’s ugly form dropping back into the water. He was shaken; had he been a moment slower, both his legs would have been clamped in the grotesque creature’s massive jaws.
Ding Longyun and Gong Xiao, who had been a step faster than him, were already back on the balcony. They turned and witnessed the near-miss, both looking shocked. Gong Xiao, in particular, showed a trace of surprise in her eyes.
Su Li’s reaction was somewhat unexpected by her.
They were both Level 3 Spiritual Source Wielders, and Su Li’s split-second composure and response to the crisis were astonishing. Gong Xiao wondered if she herself could have avoided the attack as effectively as Su Li did.
This made her see Su Li in a new light, but it was primarily a surprise.
She held herself in high regard, never believing anyone of the same level was better or stronger than her. Since Su Li was a Level 3 Spiritual Source Wielder like her, she privately assumed he was inferior. Su Li’s performance, however, utterly astonished her, and she couldn’t help but look at him again.
Su Li, having escaped death, was also drenched in cold sweat. He quickly turned and looked at the enormous creature that had crashed back into the water. It was an ugly, giant monstrous frog.
He was familiar with this gigantic monster; it looked much like the One-Eyed Frog he had seen before. It had a single, huge eyeball on its flat head that was swiveling rapidly. But this monstrous frog was two sizes larger than the previous One-Eyed Frog, measuring over three meters long. Its gaping, bloody maw was filled with two rows of serrated teeth.
It plunged into the water, then pushed off with its two hind legs. With a “splash,” water sprayed everywhere, and its massive body shot into the air, lunging toward the three people on the balcony.
Su Li tightly gripped the iron rod and backed away. The vertical eye-like lines appeared between his eyebrows.
He activated the “Peering Rune” to view the giant frog’s details. A message immediately appeared in his mind.
“Name: One-Eyed Frog King. Level: 2. Leader-class Spiritual Source Beast evolved from the Elite species, One-Eyed Frog. More vicious and tyrannical than the One-Eyed Frog. Killing the One-Eyed Frog King will grant the special ability ‘Peering Rune’ with 100% certainty.”
Su Li’s heart trembled slightly. He had killed the One-Eyed Frog before and knew it was a Level 1 Elite monster. He was surprised to find that upon evolving into the One-Eyed Frog King, it had become a Level 2 Leader-class monster. This made him wonder what level of Leader-class monster the Spider Queen was.
The previous information indicated that killing a One-Eyed Frog offered a certain probability of acquiring the “Peering Rune,” while killing the One-Eyed Frog King guaranteed acquiring the “Peering Rune” with 100% certainty.
“So this is the difference between Leader-class and Elite species: the probability of acquiring a special ability is different.” Su Li mused while retreating. Ding Longyun and Gong Xiao simultaneously moved to attack.
They were not afraid of the One-Eyed Frog King before them. Of course, without the “Peering Rune,” they didn’t know the monster’s true nature.
“Be careful! This is a Level 2 Leader-class monster,” Su Li warned. The moment the words left his mouth, Ding Longyun let out a loud laugh: “Just a mere Level 2 monster! Nothing to fear!”
He was a Level 4 Spiritual Source Wielder. Why would he fear a Level 2 monster? He exerted seven to eight hundred jin of force with both arms, swinging the steel shovel forward to meet the charge.
Gong Xiao struck with extreme speed. Her numerous hobbies included amateur fencing. Although not a professional, she had achieved a certain level of skill in fencing. Now, with sufficient strength, she used the machete like a foil. Her strike was as fast as lightning, even quicker than Ding Longyun’s.
The One-Eyed Frog King leaped up, casting a dark shadow over them. It opened its massive, bloody mouth, and suddenly, a blood-red, long tongue shot out from within.
Like the One-Eyed Frog, the One-Eyed Frog King used its tongue as one of its attack methods, but with greater speed and far superior power.
Its extended forelimb blocked Ding Longyun’s swinging steel shovel. The blood-red tongue shot forward like lightning. Gong Xiao let out a cry of surprise. She never expected the tongue to be so fast. Her machete missed it, and the tongue struck her high chest. Blood immediately spattered.
She groaned in pain and was sent tumbling backward.
Su Li quickly rushed forward and caught her from behind.
Gong Xiao fell into his arms. Su Li supported her waist. With her warm, soft body in his embrace, he looked down and saw a bloody gash across her pale chest. The One-Eyed Frog King’s tongue was terrifyingly powerful, far stronger than the regular One-Eyed Frog’s; it was like a javelin, leaving a nasty wound on Gong Xiao’s chest.
Ding Longyun’s heart skipped a beat, seeing Gong Xiao suddenly get injured and thrown back. The One-Eyed Frog King had already latched onto the balcony and suddenly lunged inside, like a mountain of flesh collapsing down on them.
“Not good.” Ding Longyun could feel the One-Eyed Frog King’s immense power. He dared not block it head-on. He shouted for Su Li and Gong Xiao to get clear and quickly retracted his steel shovel, retreating backward.
“Hurry, run inside—” Ding Longyun yelled, fleeing through the balcony into the living room area.
Su Li had no time to think. Seeing the One-Eyed Frog King charging in, he supported Gong Xiao by the waist. Ignoring the impropriety of the situation, he dragged her rapidly backward, rushing into the living room behind them.
Gong Xiao had no time to react, feeling herself being lifted and dragged backward by Su Li against her will.
The One-Eyed Frog King’s body was colossal. With a loud “crash,” it smashed through the glass sliding doors that led from the balcony to the living room. Glass shattered everywhere with an ear-splitting noise.
Although holding Gong Xiao felt nice, there was no time to waste. Su Li resolutely let go of Gong Xiao. He held the iron rod, suddenly darted forward and to the side, and in the chaos of the One-Eyed Frog King smashing through the glass doors, he used all his strength to throw the iron rod like a javelin.
The distance was close, and Su Li’s move was sudden amidst the confusion. The iron rod whistled through the air, carrying nearly thousand-jin power. It pierced the One-Eyed Frog King’s single massive eye.
Black and red matter splattered. The iron rod pierced the frog’s huge eyeball and, driven by the terrifying force, drove deep into the One-Eyed Frog King’s skull, leaving less than a foot of the rod exposed.
