Volume 1 Chapter 6
by Need_More_SleepVolume 1 + Chapter 6: Persecution
“How could they sell such medicine to children? That’s too much!”
After Eve’s comment, Leah finally noticed something was wrong. For her, obtaining this kind of poison was a bit too easy.
In the past, it was hard to even see it, but now when she was at her most desperate, this thing seemed to find its way to her.
It was truly terrifying to think about.
“I-I’m sorry. I just missed you so much…”
At this point, all Leah could do was apologize pitifully to Eve.
Her small hand tightly gripped Eve’s clothes, not daring to let go for a moment, as if afraid Eve would suddenly disappear before her.
“It’s okay, I’m not blaming you. You must be hungry? I made you some hot noodle soup. The conditions here are limited, but once we leave this place, I’ll get you something better to eat.”
Indeed, there was nothing in this gravedigger’s cottage. It was already a blessing to find some flour and cooking utensils.
Eve patted her empty pockets again. Being a dead person, it was already good enough that her clothes remained clean, she couldn’t expect to have any copper coins in her pockets.
However, Eve had her own ways of making money. After all, as a great witch, earning money from humans was child’s play.
“Hurry up and eat. Look how thin you’ve become. Haven’t you been eating properly these past 2 years?”
Leah gratefully accepted the hot noodle soup Eve handed her, so excited that tears nearly fell into the bowl.
She hadn’t eaten anything proper for several days. Now, without Eve, Leah probably would have had to split even a bowl of hot noodle soup into 12 installments to afford it.
“My scholarship and allowance were stopped because they said I was colluding with a witch and didn’t deserve the money and allowance, so they gave what should have been mine to someone else.”
Leah didn’t mind the scalding hot noodle soup, even though her lips were turning slightly red from the heat, she still couldn’t bear to stop eating.
A simple bowl of hot noodle soup had become a rare delicacy for her.
Because Eve made it for her, just this thought gave her infinite sense of security, knowing she would never have to go hungry again.
What was wrong with staying by Eve’s side? It was so much better than staying at the Church Academy.
People say those who associate with witches are fallen people. If that’s falling, then Leah was willing to fall.
After all, Eve’s gentleness was just like a mother, and Leah couldn’t ask for more.
“Do you know who they gave it to?”
“Um, it seems to be a boy who’s close to Her Holiness the Holy Maiden. He’s very popular at the Church Academy, and even the Holy Maiden favors him.”
Hearing Leah’s words, Eve could guess who it was. Who else could it be but the dragon-pride protagonist of this story?
Although Leah’s scholarship and allowance weren’t much, for her it was more than a month’s worth of food money. With this money, she could avoid going hungry.
But for the well-off dragon-pride protagonist, this amount of money would only last him 2 or 3 days of extravagance.
The fact that he wouldn’t even let go of this money was really too much.
“He doesn’t seem to be in any difficulty either.”
“I was so dizzy and lightheaded from hunger every day, almost having to beg on the streets, but he… lives in luxury. Why did he have to take away the money I relied on to survive? I worked so hard…”
As Leah spoke, she became more and more aggrieved. In her innocence, she couldn’t understand why she had to suffer such a fate.
She just wanted to not go hungry, why was such a simple wish so out of reach for her?
“So that’s why you became desperate…”
“It wasn’t because of this. I promised you I would graduate from the Church Academy, to change my fate through study. I’ve always remembered this promise. Even if I’m hungry every day, I won’t give up…”
“But, but they said I can’t graduate from the Church Academy because I’m a fallen person who colluded with a witch.”
“They even mocked me for being an orphan, having a mother who gave birth to me but didn’t raise me, saying that’s why I would associate with witches.”
“They said unless I have strong backing to vouch for me, I’ll never be able to graduate from the Church Academy, and might even be expelled.”
“Studying magic was all I had after you left… so I really didn’t know what to do. That’s why I bought these pills, thinking if I took them, I could see you… My grievances, I could only tell them to you.”
