Chapter 300
by fanqienovelChapter 300: Trilobite Stared at the Abyss, Imagining It Had Ordinary Eyes
“Hey, I really ran into a big shot this time.”
“A Great Old One?”
As Trilobite moved closer, he finally confirmed what kind of creature stood before him.
The “Great Old One” he mentioned wasn’t the strange, twisted deities from Lovecraft’s writings but a true ruler of the oceans, a magnificent creature at the top of the food chain, looking down on all life!
It had a massive size of nearly ten meters, with a huge conical shell that took up most of its body, making it one of the most splendid beings in the Ordovician ocean!
“Cornerstone!”
“Hmm, another documentary star.”
The Cornerstone appeared in the first episode of the famous BBC documentary “Walking with Sea Monsters.”
In that documentary, the Cornerstone was a fierce colossal creature, with tentacles as powerful as a giant squid’s, easily tearing apart and eating a sea scorpion.
Of course, the reconstruction of the Cornerstone in the documentary wasn’t completely right.
In terms of relationship, the Cornerstone was closer to nautiluses; also, whether octopuses or squids with suckers and very thick tentacles existed in the Ordovician was still a question.
Some scientists even thought the Cornerstone’s antennae only served to stretch out its thin membrane, for filtering and eating small animals.
“But it seemed the truth wasn’t like that.”
The Cornerstone’s tentacles, though not as thick and strong as a giant squid’s, weren’t so weak that they could only stretch membranes and pick on plankton.
At least it had the predatory capability of a nautilus.
Even though those many tentacles looked very creepy and swarming toward him could make many girls and young men scream, sadly, Trilobite wasn’t a young lad.
His female coworkers were tough women who could carry plaster-wrapped fossils and walk miles in the desert!
So, when those thin tentacles rushed at Trilobite, he didn’t panic at all.
These weak tentacles just tickled his skin; hitting his eyes…
He didn’t feel a thing!
His eyes were “calcite crystal clusters,” and what feeling could you expect from a crystal cluster?
It only felt like his sight was blocked by a bunch of hair.
It was a little annoying.
“Roar—!”
Trilobite roared, using that annoyance to suddenly push his huge head forward!
His giant jaws opened wide, showing scary saber teeth!
Though these saber teeth were extensions of his jaw bone and had no enamel, so they weren’t as tough, they were plenty to handle soft-bodied animals!
Just as Trilobite was about to bite…
“Hmm?!”
He suddenly saw the Cornerstone’s big eyes staring fiercely at him, which shocked Trilobite a lot.
“Why are you staring so fiercely?!”
“Postosuchus” stared at those pure black eyes that turned utterly ordinary in a blink, frozen for just half a second.
Half a second was all it had.
“Did its eyes seem strange a moment ago?”
“Ah… probably my imagination…”
The Abyss gazed at Trilobite, and Trilobite gazed back at the Abyss.
But Trilobite’s vision was too poor to see the Abyss clearly, so his mind filled in ordinary eyes instead.
—-
“How… impossible…”
“Half a second!?”
Ubersalas watched the “colossal creature” move again, its Soul utterly blank.
“Useless!?”
“This thing is immune to ‘Abyss Gaze’!?”
“What… kind of monster… is this…”
Amid disbelief and terror, Ubersalas’s final thought vanished alongside the suddenly crushing saber teeth!
“Ah—ugh—!”
Though snake-like tentacles swarmed over Trilobite’s body, their weakness couldn’t slow him.
“Pshhh—!”
The razor-sharp saber teeth punched through Ubersalas’s head, shattered its defenses, and pierced deep into its Soul!
“Roarrrr—!”
The Ether Ruler shrieked sharply, countless tentacles thrashing wildly.
But nothing could save it now.
“Hah—!”
Trilobite happily clamped down on his prey, the “cornerstone,” and crawled slowly toward the “shore.”
“Time to suck the giant squid!”
Yet just then…
“Splash…”
“Splash…”
Several slender necks rose from the sea.
Their eyes gleamed with astonishment as they beheld the colossal beast’s mighty Divine Body.
“It slaughtered the mighty Ether Ruler Ubersalas like chopping vegetables—incredible strength!”
“Perhaps…”
“Whew…”
“It’s over, it’s over.”
“That felt amazing.”
“Had a good workout.”
“Not bad at all!”
Sylvia stretched her graceful waist, thoroughly pleased.
She leaned casually against the “pipes,” hands cradling the back of her head.
“The work environment’s pitch-dark and awful,”
“but the job itself was great—so many ‘dirty things’ needing purification!”
“Hope we get more next time; that was hardly challenging.”
“Except…”
“Grrroowl…”
A stomach growled loudly.
The fierce battle had drained their energy.
Sylvia was hungry.
The Chosen Ones warriors who’d entered the Ether Dragon’s body with her were hungry too.
Though their power surpassed mortals, they still needed food to function.
Even Astartes had to eat, no?
“That’s a problem,”
“Where’d supplies come from in this sealed place…”
“Surely we can’t just…”
Sylvia turned…
*Clang! Clang!*
She rapped the pipe wall twice, testing if it might be edible.
“Probably not…”
“But where do we find—”
Something soft bumped her side before she finished.
A red “sphere.”
Dozens of identical red “spheres” drifted toward the resting or sparring Chosen Ones warriors.
*Buzz—*
The spheres hummed softly. Slabs of meat-like matter, glowing toxic green, rose from within them.
“Uh…”
"Is this a supply?"
Sylvia scratched her head and tentatively picked up the still-wriggling meat, lifting it to her mouth.
"Hiss…"
She gently tore off a small piece and held it in her mouth for ten seconds.
"Mm."
No issues.
Though slightly fishy, it was quite fragrant—reminiscent of sea fish eaten raw.
"Crunch… crunch…"
She chewed for another ten seconds. The fishiness blended with freshness, while its springy texture spread through her mouth!
"Gulp—!"
The morsel slid down her throat.
Her stomach’s hunger lessened, warming her entire belly!
"Such capable, vibrant flesh…"
"Undifferentiated ‘divine flesh’!?"
"Hey!"
"Everyone!"
"The food here’s not bad!"
The Purity Officer’s words sparked cheers from all warriors.
Yet at that moment…
"Boom—!"
Another faint tremor shook the ground.
Sylvia’s ear blades snapped upright.
"Remaining enemies?"
"No—new invaders!"
"All hands! Arm yourselves! Time to serve the Giant God!"
